What Innovation Can Do for Your Life

Innovation is a skill that resides in everyone, even if many believe they lack it. The ability to innovate is within your reach. If you’ve ever been impressed by someone else's creative talent, remember that you too possess the capacity to create and innovate. It simply requires time and effort. Each person is inherently creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten wasn't reserved for a select few with talent; the reality is that potential exists in everyone.

Think about how long it took for you to learn to ride a bike or drive, or how to avoid making the same mistake repeatedly. The same principle applies to innovation. It requires practice and patience before this cognitive skill becomes second nature. This article aims to share some strategies for incorporating innovation into your life.

Ignore what others say. Follow your own rhythm. Listening to other people's opinions can turn the music you wish to create into a disorganized noise. If you have an original thought, don't waste energy trying to convince others of its worth. Most likely, their feedback will be negative. If all the brilliant minds throughout history had listened to their contemporaries, we might still be stuck in the dark ages.

Dedicate time to it. I cannot emphasize this enough, but please don’t take this advice as a reason to quit your job. Don’t do that. This requires some careful time management, but with a bit of discipline, you can balance both your job and your passion.

Get some exercise. Take a stroll. Run a mile or two. Let those endorphins flow through your body. Physical activity helps to clear and relax your mind, paving the way for new ideas to emerge.

Document your dreams. Aren't some of them the wildest scenarios that your conscious mind would never consider? If you've experienced such dreams, and I'm certain you have, it reveals the innovative potential that lies within you. So, write down those notes. Those dreams might ignite a spark of innovation in you.

Discover your own style. Just as you can distinguish a Van Gogh from a Matisse, or recognize a piece by Hemingway by its distinctive language, the same goes for you. People will value your innovation more because it reflects your unique perspective—something that no one else could conceive. This uniqueness will demonstrate your worth as an asset.

Avoid relying on fancy gadgets or tools. You don't need the priciest set of paints to create a masterpiece. The same principle applies to writing. You don’t require a luxurious fountain pen or premium paper to produce a bestseller. For instance, J.K. Rowling penned the first installment of the Harry Potter series on scraps of tissue. So what if you own an expensive DSLR camera if your photography skills are lacking? Who cares if you have a flashy laptop if writing doesn’t come easily to you? As an artist improves, they often simplify their toolkit, as they understand what is effective and what isn’t.

Nothing will succeed without genuine passion. What motivates you to rise each morning? What fuels your drive? What is the one pursuit you would feel lost without? Sometimes, those with talent are overshadowed by individuals who desire success more fiercely. Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare. Ellen Degeneres once remarked that if you’re not engaged in something you truly want to do, then perhaps you don’t want it enough. This is true. Sometimes, the desire for something can make you virtually unstoppable. That is the essence of passion. It will keep you moving forward.

Don't stress over finding inspiration. You can't compel it to come; it often arrives when you least anticipate it. Be ready for those unpredictable yet unavoidable moments. An idea could hit you while you’re on the subway, but if you lack a piece of paper to jot down a thought that could change the course of events, it will be a missed opportunity. Prevent such mishaps by keeping a pen and paper within reach at all times.

I hope this piece has guided you in bringing more innovation into your life. Remember, you are pursuing these activities for your own fulfillment, not for anyone else’s validation. However, before long, others will take notice, and everything will begin to build from there.
